To keep your water healthy and to extend the life of your filtration unit, it is imperative to properly maintain your filtration system. Our water-healing specialists offer the following tips on keeping different types of water purification systems healthy.

For Whole-House Carbon Filter Systems

Whole-house carbon filter systems are among the most common filtration systems used today, especially for people with access to public drinking water. They work to remove the taste and smell of chlorine and other disinfectants used by municipal water authorities and other public water suppliers to treat the water before safely delivering it to your tap. Carbon filters also protect against volatile organic compounds like benzene, pesticides, trichloroethylene, and petroleum-based compounds that are harmful to human health.

Carbon filter systems are low-maintenance and require filters to be changed once a year for residential systems. Replacement may occur more frequently for businesses that use this type of filtration system.

For Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis systems use a process designed to reduce the mineral content of water by forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane. These systems effectively remove the taste and smell of chlorine, sediment, and other volatile organic compounds. A reverse osmosis system produces the highest level of pure drinking water available to residential consumers.

Maintenance is crucial to keeping a reverse osmosis system working properly. Most systems use several filters, each designed to treat a different component in the water.

Keep your reverse osmosis system in tip-top shape with routine service from a professional water purification company. Cartridges should be sanitized during every service call and all components of the system evaluated to ensure they are working properly. We recommend changing and sanitizing reverse osmosis systems filters every 12 months. The life span of the membrane is dependent on how much sediment is being filtered from your water, but the average is 3 years. If the water pressure is low, it is a warning sign that either the filters or membrane are clogged and in need of service.

For Water Softeners

Water softeners remove harsh ions from the water — most often calcium and magnesium — that can make your hair and skin unhealthy and wreak havoc on your appliances. It is important to use pure salt with these units to keep them working properly. The resin bed and control valve parts should be cleaned and checked at least once a year. The brine tank also should be cleaned annually. Failure to properly maintain the system will reduce its life span and effectiveness.

For Water Distilling Purification Systems

Water distillers work by “boiling” contaminants out of the water before it reaches your tap. It converts water into vapor and then condenses it back into a liquid state that is healthy and safe to drink. Distillers effectively remove waterborne biological contaminants including viruses and bacteria. Large distillers are capable of producing up to 12 gallons of distilled water in a few hours. Many can be plumbed to deliver the distilled water directly to your tap and or refrigerator if it has an option for water or making ice.

Due to the nature of how a distiller purifies the water, hard minerals and other byproducts removed from the water can build up in the unit. We recommend having your unit serviced at least once a year. Our water-healing technicians will clean the unit and inspect the boiling chamber to extend the life of the unit and to ensure the system continues to produce safe drinking water.
